Fashionable at 50+

Fashion for the over 50 woman can be a bit of a minefield, with most women wanting to emulate the timeless beauty of the of Gladys Knight, Lena Horne or Delores "Mom" Winans, but not sure how to go about it.

When we get to middle aged (2 horrible words I know), we want the confidence boost that dressing up and looking good can give us but most of us have the parts of our bodies that perhaps haven't worn quite so well - areas that we prefer to keep under wraps! However, looking like an Egyptian mummy is not part of the plan either.

There are simple tricks and practices that women over 50 can use to be fashionable and look fabulous:

• Don't get too skinny as this will make your face look drawn and tired. However, (before you reach for the packet of chocolate biscuits), don't put on too much weight either!

Always wear a good bra. Nothing is guaranteed to make you look frumpier than a sagging, ill fitting bra. You should choose a bra that lifts your boobs while making sure that it fits correctly. It is always a good idea to get professional help if you're unsure of your cup size - most good department stores provide a free bra fitting service.

• Try to wear fitted rather than baggy and shapeless clothes (obviously that's fitted, not 2 sizes too small!) Also try to avoid skirts that are too short - nothing shouts mutton dressed as lamb more than a mature (ok middle aged) woman in a mini skirt.

• Go for classic styles rather than fussy. Frills, little flowery prints, overdone details such as gold trim are really very aging. (Remember Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane!)

• Cover the tops of your arms. (Unless you've been working out and have arms like our First Lady) This doesn't necessarily mean long sleeves. Tops that support your bust but reveal your shoulders can look incredibly sexy while drawing attention away from the bat's wings!

• Choose a good foundation. It is not necessary to put your foundation on with a trowel just because your face is not as young as it was! The key is to make sure that you choose the right color for your skin tone. An orange line around your chin is not a good look. Ask for professional help at a make-up counter in a department store if you are unsure what color/coverage works best for you.  If you're shy, invite a Mary Kay Cosmetics representative to give you a private consultation in the comfort of your home.  You can even invite a couple of girlfriends to join you for a makeover party.

• Try to opt for a more natural look (doesn't matter if it takes a bag full of cosmetics to achieve) and don't overdo the hair - platinum blond helmet hair with bright red lips, nails, eye shadow and blusher is likely to make you look more like a drag queen!

  • Update you hair style from time to time.  Change the color, pin it up, let it drape, cut it or add length, twist it, braid it.  Just go for it - and if it doesn't work for you - CHANGE IT!

Being fashionable and looking fabulous over 50 really is not so difficult; just remember we're still 25 inside, it just takes us a bit longer to get ready!
